Youth Leadership

We are committed to developing youth leadership across the organisation and ensuring LYT members’ voices remain at the heart of everything we do, while amplifying their impact across Lewisham.

Members have the opportunity to gain leadership training, hands-on event planning experience, and the opportunity to influence decisions about LYT’s programmes and activities as part of Members’ Committee and our Peer Mentorship programme.

These progression pathways are designed for returning LYT members who are ready to step up as changemakers within their community. Projects may explore social action, leadership, mentoring and political performance.

The Big Give Campaign

Members’ Committee raised over £4,000 for LYT’s programmes during the Big Give’s Art for Impact week!

Members discovered the art of campaigning by creating a fundraising campaign that inspired supporters to donate towards LYT’s free activities.

They planned for staff members to run a 10k race, whilst gradually adding costumes and props, and lobbied for support by sharing the impact that LYT has had on their lives.

Not only did they show their commitment to LYT’s programmes, but they also built a whole host of transferable skills, from campaign planning to digital marketing, leadership, and storytelling.

This campaign team collectively organised action and creatively problem-solved, leading them to surpass their ambitious target…TWICE!

The Gardening Project

Members’ Committee transformed the garden at LYT’s creative hub!

Taking the lead in reimagining and redesigning the garden, Members Committee collaborated to plan, design, and implement improvements - turning the space into a welcoming, functional area for creativity, socialising, and community projects.

Their ideas include seating areas, creative installations, and spaces for workshops and performances  bringing their vision for a vibrant outdoor hub to life.

Rainbow Criteria

Members’ Committee took to the streets to action their youth-led social action campaign to make Lewisham more LGBTQIA+ youth friendly.

Rainbow Criteria is a youth-led accreditation to recognise public spaces and organisations that have made a commitment to being a safe environment for LGBTQIA+ young people.

The Rainbow Criteria empowers young people to demand safe spaces within Lewisham borough and beyond, creating a knock on effect for other members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

As part of the Rainbow Criteria, organisations must make a commitment to the following things:
  • Respect chosen pronouns and names for young people, and stand in solidarity by displaying staff pronouns
  • Considering having a LGBTQIA+ Ambassador who is trained to support young people
  • Gender neutral toilets (where possible for space reasons)
  • A zero tolerance stance against discrimination & bullying, with a clear and simple process to reporting discrimination or bullying
  • Using gender neutral language, when addressing young people, staff, volunteers and the public
  • Protecting young LGBTQIA+ people’s data, including their chosen names or pronouns
  • Supporting and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the year, by championing LGBTQIA+ charities and creating opportunities for LGBTQIA+ young people
In an environment where gender, sexuality, race and disability are under fire, LYT remains committed to equality, challenging injustice, and centering the voices of young people who represent the diversity of Lewisham borough. If you would like to nominate an organisation who you’d think would pass the Rainbow Criteria, OR you’re an organisation that would like to be involved please fill in this form and we’ll get back to you.
